Terms of Service

Last updated: May 29, 2026  ·  RevivalRO (ragnarevival.com)

The short version: Play fair, treat others with respect, don't cheat, don't exploit, and don't do anything that ruins the game for everyone else. The detailed version is below.

By creating an account or playing on RevivalRO (including Freya, Loki, and all associated websites), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you don't agree, please don't use our services.

1. About RevivalRO

RevivalRO is a free, fan-run Ragnarok Online private server community that has been running since 2004, originally as RebirthRO. We host two servers: Freya (Renewal EP21) and Loki (Pre-Renewal Classic), plus the GemstoneWoW World of Warcraft community. Everything we offer is free of charge.

RevivalRO is an independent project and is not affiliated with Gravity Co., Ltd. or any official Ragnarok Online publisher.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. By registering, you confirm that you meet this requirement. If you are under 18, you should have parental or guardian permission to play.

3. Your Account

You are responsible for keeping your account safe. Do not share your password with anyone. This includes people who claim to be RevivalRO staff. Our Game Masters will never ask for your password.

4. Rules of Conduct

We want RevivalRO to be a fun and welcoming place for everyone. The following behaviour is not allowed:

5. Game Masters and Staff

Our Game Masters (GMs) are volunteer staff who help maintain a fair environment. They have the authority to warn, mute, jail, or ban players who violate these rules. All GM decisions are final unless you submit a formal appeal through our Discord.

GMs will never ask for your password, promise items in exchange for anything, or conduct events in private. If someone claims to be a GM and asks for these things, report them immediately.

6. Donations and Purchases

RevivalRO accepts voluntary donations to help cover server costs. Donations may grant access to cosmetic items or convenience features but should never provide a pay-to-win advantage. We aim to keep the game balanced and fair for all players, including non-donors.

7. Intellectual Property

Our content is ours. All custom content on RevivalRO, including but not limited to custom quests, custom items, server mechanics, scripts, website code, and design, was independently developed by the RevivalRO team. This content is original work and is protected under applicable copyright law. No third party holds any ownership, licence, or proprietary rights over it.

Our images carry no copyright claims. Every image displayed on this website was generated using artificial intelligence tools. Under settled U.S. copyright law, AI-generated works produced without sufficient human creative authorship cannot be copyrighted by anyone. The U.S. Copyright Office has confirmed this in its official policy reports: Part 1 — Digital Replicas (2023) and Part 2 — Copyrightability (2024). Purely AI-generated outputs with no human authorship are not eligible for copyright protection. This means no individual or company can assert copyright ownership over any image on this website, and no such claim would be legally valid. See also the U.S. Copyright Office official guidance on AI and copyright for the full legal position.

Our server software is 100% independently developed — and the law protects it. The server software powering RevivalRO was written entirely from scratch by independent developers using open-source community emulator projects. No proprietary code, assets, databases, or software belonging to any game publisher was copied, used, extracted, or incorporated at any stage of development. This is what the legal community calls clean-room development — an independently created implementation that achieves interoperability through original engineering, not copying.

Game mechanics, rules, and systems cannot be copyrighted — this is settled law. Under 17 U.S.C. § 102(b) of the U.S. Copyright Act, copyright protection expressly does not extend to any "idea, procedure, process, system, method of operation, concept, principle, or discovery." The U.S. Supreme Court confirmed in Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service, 499 U.S. 340 (1991) that facts, data, systems, and functional elements are not copyrightable regardless of the effort put into creating them. Game mechanics, stat formulas, item databases, map layouts, spawn rates, and server logic are functional systems — not creative expression — and therefore carry no copyright protection. No publisher owns the rules of a game.

Reverse engineering for interoperability is explicitly legal under U.S. federal law. 17 U.S.C. § 1201(f) of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) explicitly carves out a legal right to reverse engineer software for the sole purpose of achieving interoperability with an independently created program. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals confirmed this in two landmark rulings: in Sega Enterprises Ltd. v. Accolade, Inc., 977 F.2d 1510 (9th Cir. 1992), the court held that disassembling and reverse engineering copyrighted software to study its functional elements and achieve compatibility constitutes fair use under 17 U.S.C. § 107 — especially when no other means of obtaining that interoperability information exists. Eight years later, in Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. v. Connectix Corp., 203 F.3d 596 (9th Cir. 2000), the Ninth Circuit reaffirmed and extended this principle, ruling that building an independent emulator — even one that required intermediate copying of firmware to study its interface — was transformative fair use. The court held that such work is in the public interest because it promotes interoperability and competition. These rulings are binding precedent in the United States.

We do not circumvent any technological protection measures. A critical distinction in emulation law is whether a server implementation bypasses a technological access control. RevivalRO does not circumvent, disable, or bypass any authentication system, encryption, or access control mechanism. Players connect using a game client they have independently obtained. Our server software communicates with that client using the same open network protocol documented and studied by the independent development community. This places RevivalRO firmly within the protected category established by Sega v. Accolade and Sony v. Connectix, and clearly outside the narrow fact pattern that led to adverse rulings in cases involving active circumvention of DRM or CD-key verification systems.

No publisher holds any rights over this project. RevivalRO does not reproduce, distribute, or make available any proprietary game client, proprietary server software, proprietary databases, or copyrighted creative assets owned by any game publisher. No publisher has any legal basis to assert copyright, trademark, or any other intellectual property claim over RevivalRO's independently developed server software, its custom content, its community, or its operation. Any attempt to claim otherwise would be factually false, legally unsupported, and contrary to the settled body of U.S. and international law described above. We are prepared to defend this position vigorously in any legal forum.

8. Termination and Bans

We reserve the right to suspend or permanently ban any account that violates these Terms of Service, without prior notice and without any obligation to refund donations. Severe violations (such as hacking or serious threats) may result in immediate permanent bans without warning.

If you believe your ban was applied in error, you may appeal through our Discord server. We will review appeals fairly but our decision is final.

9. Server Availability

We do our best to keep the servers running 24/7, but we cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability. Scheduled maintenance, unexpected outages, or force majeure events may cause temporary downtime. We are not liable for any loss of game progress resulting from server downtime, rollbacks, or technical issues.

We also reserve the right to wipe, reset, or shut down servers at any time, though we will always try to give advance notice for major events like resets.

10. Limitation of Liability

RevivalRO is provided "as is" without any warranties. We are not responsible for any loss of data, game progress, or items resulting from bugs, server issues, or actions taken by other players. Your use of the service is entirely at your own risk.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms as the game or community changes. If anything significant changes, we'll announce it on Discord. The date at the top always shows when it was last updated. Continuing to use RevivalRO after an update means you accept the new version.
